How to Replace a Broken Window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
