How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
