How to Replace a Broken Window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Next step: Clean the glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
