How do I replace a cracked window?
Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.
First step: Remove the old glass from its frame
First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.
Second step: Clean and polish the new glass
Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.
The third step is to reinstall the glass
Attach the window panes to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.
Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged
To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.
The fifth step is to seal the area.
After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.
Let the caulking dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
