How To

How do you replace a broken window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
