How To

How to Install a Receptacle Box

It is important to follow the recommendations of your local inspector when installing any type electric outlet. This includes ensuring the correct installation and that there is no water damage or fire hazard.

For installation, most boxes come prewired with four wires coming directly from the breaker panels. The two black wires run through a box to the first screws on one side. While the red and the white wires run to the second screws on the opposite side. When connecting wires, it is important that you don't use wire nuts or wrap around screws. If you do this, it will be difficult for the wires not to stick in their place once they are tightened. You want to allow them to move freely, but keep them tight enough that they don't pull away from their holes.

Another piece of hardware may be needed if you are adding a receptacle for an already existing box. This task involves removing the metal top from the box and adding a new cover. After the cover plate has been attached and the hole for the new receptacle is created, it is time to connect all the wires to this new receptacle.

You may not need a licensed electrician to replace the existing light switches in your home. To begin, you need to remove the old light switch from its mounting point. Then you should take the time to disconnect all the wires connected to the switch. These wires can be used to power the switch or supply electricity to the light fixtures in the room. Now you are ready to start the replacement process.

Once you have removed the old switch, measure the distance between wall studs and mark it with a permanent marker. Once you've done this, you need to decide if the switch should be placed high above or low to the floor. Depending on the height at which the switch will be mounted, you will either need to drill a hole for the mounting bracket or attach the switch directly to the wall using drywall anchors.

Once the measurements have been taken and the locations marked up, you can start the project. You will need to remove the drywall from the area where the switch will go. You should leave at least 8 inches between each stud to prevent accidentally cutting the cable. Next, install the switch by attaching the brackets to it. Next, attach the cables and secure the switch onto the mounting brackets. Once you have installed the switch, turn the power back ON and test it to make sure it functions properly.
