How do you replace a broken window?
Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.
First step: Take the glass out of its frame
First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.
Second step: Clean your new glass
Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.
Step 3: Install the new glass
Reattach the window panes into the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair the damage
Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.
Fifth step: Seal the repaired area
After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.
Let the caulking dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
