How To

How to Replace a Broken Window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean your new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
