Porch

Porch is a totally different way to find contractors and home-improvement professionals than Thumbtack. Porch is a website that allows customers to upload pictures and descriptions about their projects and receive quotes from professionals and contractors. You can also call contractors to discuss your needs and schedule an appointment. In some areas, Porch also conducts background checks on its service providers. These background checks won't guarantee contractor success, but they can be a valuable resource to locate local contractors and construction professionals.

Gentask

Gentask is a rival to Thumbtack and allows users to search for service professionals. It lets users get free quotes and track reviews and completion rates. The app allows users to contact professionals directly. Thumbtack is perhaps more popular but Gentask's reach may be limited. It is available for Android and iPhone. It has a questionable market reach.

ProReferral

If you are one of the many contractors, painters, or other service providers who would like to advertise your business on Thumbtack, you should definitely consider using ProReferral. ProReferral allows you to choose the area and type of work to be targeted. Once you have been assigned to a particular area, you will see a list of potential clients. Once you've matched with a specific area, you will be presented with a list of potential customers. You can earn credits for as long as they choose to use you as their expert. You can either choose as many or as few services as you like, or simply add them to the "Other” field. Once the list of leads is generated, you'll have the option to purchase each lead or pass them on to a competitor.

HomeAdvisor

HomeAdvisor, like its competitors, Thumbtack, is an online platform for finding contractors. There is a difference. Before you can find a list professional service providers near you, you will have to fill in a detailed questionnaire. HomeAdvisor's matchmaking process is faster because of this. HomeAdvisor is less popular than its competitors but many contractors have been pre-screened for criminal and financial infractions.

ServiceWhale

When comparing ServiceWhale vs Thumbtack competitors, the first thing to consider is the price point. This website, which is named after a home service professional, offers a price comparison engine. It automatically generates pricing information so users can compare prices before making a decision. Before listing their business, contractors must also submit a price list. Angi, another popular Thumbtack competitor, allows home service professionals post paid or free ads.

FAQ

Is it worth paying a handyman an hourly rate or per-project basis.

It really comes down to personal preference. To know the exact cost of a handyman's services, some prefer to pay by the hour. Some prefer to pay per completed job, as they might be working on multiple projects simultaneously. Either way works fine.

What qualifications do I need to be a handyman?

As a handyman, patience is the most important skill. Additionally, you should have knowledge of plumbing, electrical systems, and carpentry.

Many jobs are available to qualified workers. However, if they don't exist, you may not be eligible.

This is why you might consider enrolling in a school that specializes in these types of courses.

How can I find a reliable handyman?

You should always get references before you hire a handyman. Ask your family and friends if they have ever used them. You can also look online for handymen's reviews.

Do professional handyman services really make sense?

It depends entirely on the project. A professional handyman service will be helpful if you have a complicated project such as an office remodel.

Which is easier: contracting or being a handyman?

As you only require yourself and your tools, being a handyman takes less time than contracting. However, you must be able to manage your own workload and schedule, while contractors typically rely on subcontractors to do most of the work.

How do I replace a damaged window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. This repair will take only 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
